The Executive Director of the Southern Indiana Center for the Arts is Mr. Dick Parman. Mr. Parman is probably recognized by many around southern Indiana as being the former band director of Brownstown Central High School. He taught at Brownstown Central for twenty years before deciding upon an early retirement. Before BCHS, he was band director at North Harrison High School, Crothersville High School and Medora High School.
Mr. Parman holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in music education from Indiana State University. He has also done some work with the Jackson County Community Theatre. He was musical director of the production of "Godspel", "Always, Patsy Cline", and most recently, "Pump Boys and Dinettes". He plays music in several groups including trombone and euphonium in the Schulhaus 4+3, the house band for Seymour’s Octoberfest. Nearly the same group of musicians play Dixieland music as the Schoolhouse 4+3. Dick plays banjo in that group. In the Columbus City Band, Dick plays trombone, euphonium, French horn, tuba, and occasionally conducts the band. He plays guitar in a quartet, WindStrings 4, that often performs for church services and also in a brass quintet that occasionally plays for weddings. He has also written musical arrangements that have been performed by all of those groups.
Parman states, “I am not a visual artist. But I do very much appreciate the arts. My brother, Greg, has a commercial art degree and my daughter, Rebecca has a sculpture degree, so I have been involved and around art my entire life.” He also says that we can expect to have some music around the Center from time to time. |
